God Is Dope Live: Riz

September 30, 2021

26 year-old Charisma "Riz" Green was born in New York and raised in Lithonia, Georgia. The R&B and soul singer touts a sultry voice with an enticing and full sound.

Check out her performancecovering "You Don't Know My Name" by Alicia Keys and singing her original song "Feels Like" on our latest God Is Dope Live Session, accompanied by guitarist Dylan Kohl.

Would you interpret your skills as a gift from God or a learned talent?

Definitely a gift. I’ve been singing before I could even remember and I was told I could really sing without any vocal lesson. So my voice is definitely a gift from God.

How were you introduced into your love of music?

I was first introduced to my love for music at a very young age. I grew up in church and sung in the children’s choir. I was always chosen to sing lead. I then started participating in school talent shows, singing songs by Yolanda Adams, Karen Clark and Tina Turner. As I got older, I became more influenced by Lauryn Hill, Anita Baker, Beyoncé and Erykah Badu. I would love to collaborate with Ari Lennox, Kyle Dion and Tame Impala.

What emotions do you hope to invoke with your music?

People who know me, know that I am very quiet and I’ve been that way my entire life. Sometimes I find it quite difficult to express to others. With my music I hope to invoke all of my emotions. I want to show vulnerability. It’s been a task for me to do that verbally so I want to through my music allow my voice to be heard that way.

What is your creative process like?

The first thing I do is write. I write about everything that comes to mind. Whether I think it makes sense or not, I just write it all down. (Often times I think they are random thoughts but they somehow made sense all along). Then I find a beat that speaks to me. Once I find the right beat, I piece those words together and come up with a melody.

What project(s) are or have you currently worked on?

I’m currently work on my first EP. I’m really looking forward to the final project and I can’t wait to share it with you guys! I’ve also performed at the Taste of Soul Festival on September 5th.
